Ukrainian mortar squad on the frontline

Donetsk Oblast, in southern Ukraine: For several days, Ukrainian soldiers have been trying to recapture village after village – but the counter-offensive is difficult. On the outskirts of the village, Vladislav and his men have taken position. His squad is one of several mortar teams tasked with supporting the advance. The most difficult task at the moment is to find a position for the mortar that is as hidden from view as possible and easy for the ammunition squad to reach. Also important: a good basement as protection against enemy fire. A short time later, the importance of the protective shelter becomes apparent: the Russian artillery responds to the Ukrainian advance, the soldiers seek refuge in the basement from the projectiles that hit them – Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, July 25, 2022.
